Its Earth Day!

April 22nd, 2008

A Little Bit About This Great Day

More then 200 million people in 41 countries celebrate earth day. Its become quite a phenomenon since it started all the way back in 1970. Legend has it that Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin had visited the California to survey damage to the California coast line due to the great oil spill. Upon witnessing the damage he immediately rushed back to Washington D.C. to create a holiday to celebrate none other then the earth.

The History of Earth Day

On this date over 25 years ago in 1970 over 20 million people participated in rallies, and demonstrations through out the United States on behalf of the earth. By 1990 earth day had become an international event of epic proportions. The day is now used to draw attention to current local, and environmental problems, and to discuss commonsense solutions.

An organization called Earth Day Network (clever title right?) now coordinates all the earth day activities around the globe. The organization estimates this year over 1,000 groups, and 500 million people will participate in earth day celebrations.

Stand Up for Environment, Sign a Petition!

Upon entering the groups website is a link to sign a petition to inform you congress person you want something done about global warming. I took the five minutes out of my day to fill out this form, and I suggest you do as well.
