Living In A Bubble

Indoor Air Pollution
If you live in a big city the air you breathe while outside maybe as detrimental to your health as trying to land that handstand on your new Sustainable Skateboard. What you didn’t know is that the air you breathe while inside your own home maybe even worse, 10 times as worse! That’s because microbial pollutants like mold, pet dander, and plant pollen can combine with chemicals like radon to create something even nastier then that pile of Poop In Your Backyard. These toxic particles floating around by your toothbrush can lead to allergies, asthma, and even AIDS! OK so not AIDS but still some pretty nasty stuff.
Where Does This Stuff Come From?
Anything you bring into your home can be potentially harmful to your health. The bad part is our modern airtight homes don’t allow these nasty critters to escape. Starting with the basement I’ll show you were these nasties hang out and how to get rid of them.
The Basement
Problem: Cracks in your basement floor and walls allows mold to seep in.
Solution: Fill these cracks with a non-allergen based putty.
Problem: The Furnace. Call it the dust mite mover, allowing these mites to to relocate within your home.
Solution: Install a new allergen free Air Filter at least once a month.
Ground Level
Problem: Those ugly drapes your wife bought. Allergens love to collect inside of these things.
Solution: Replace them with blinds or be prepared to wash them AT MINIMUM bi-weekly.
Problem: Your furniture. IKEA maybe cheap but their furniture is loaded with things most of us probably can even pronounce like polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) Alright so I’m sure you can pronounce it but nonetheless this chemical once used to dye/stain your furniture will eventually fill your lungs. Kind of scary eh?
Solution: Use only furniture made from wood…JK although its not a bad idea. Just look for the allergen free label on the furniture you do end up purchasing .
Problem: Fido. Lurking in your pals hair is are some pretty nasty creatures that not only make him itch but can also irritate your sinuses.
Solution: Keep em clean. You wash yourself daily, why does Fido only get a bath once a month? Bump that interval up to a weekly schedule and you’ll have a happier dog and a happier you.
Problem: Your mattress. Oh yeah where all the action happens baby. Well maybe. As with your furniture you mattress comes pre-soaked in harmful chemicals.
Solution: Not much you can do here except buy a new mattress or pitch your mattress and resort to sleeping in a sleeping bag.
The Best Thing You Can Do
Ventilate your home. Crack a window my friend and breath some fresh air. Ventilating your home every 48 hours can help stall mold and bacteria growth, plus with your windows open you might just be able to ease drop on your neighbors.
What Have You Done?
Got something to add to the list? Lets hear it.

I do believe everything man builds carries the seeds of its own demise but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t strive to create a better world not only for ourselves but also for our children. I mean after all we are the ones who have to live on this planets, shouldn’t we make the best of the time we spend here?
