Recycle Your Old Cell Phone

March 5th, 2008

A Growing Problem

Cell phones are a growing problem, not a growing problem like that zit on your nose. Rather a growing problem like the fact that in 2005 over 130 million cell phones ended up in the dump. If you whip out your abacus to do the math that’s over 65,000 tons of waste per year. The sad part is currently only 2% of cell phones are recycled.

Why Its a Problem

Cell phones contain hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic, and you thought your Uncle Eddies Moonshine was some potent stuff. If you throw your old cell phone in the trash its destined for the incinerator where upon combustion dangerous gases will be spewed into our atmosphere. Even worse, your cellphone could end up in a landfill where those harmful chemicals will leak into the soil and ultimately contaminate our groundwater.

What You Can Do About It

The good news is you can make a difference. Unlike the election of 2004 your vote actually does count in these matters. By recycling your old cell phone you can do your part to reduce waste, and avoid adding anymore toxic substances to the water we drink and the air we breathe.

Where To Recycle

If you type recycle my cell phone into Google you will get thousands of hits. Like everything else recycling unfortunately has become a big business. Be wary of companies that will only recycle specific makes or models of cell phones, these companies are most likely only out to make a buck.

Also be sure to ask the question what happens to my cell phone? If the recycling agency simply takes the parts they need out of your cell phone and then pitches the rest your not doing the environment any favors. Personally, I have dealt with Recycle My Cell Phone and have had a pleasant experience. They have been upfront with what they do with your old cell phone upon receiving it, and pledge to live up to the highest environmental standards possible.

Lets Hear About Your Experiences

If you’ve dealt with any cell phone recycling organizations we want to hear about it! Was the experience positive? Would you recommend the organization to others?
