Putting green living to the testIf you live in a big city the air you breathe while outside maybe as detrimental to your health as trying to land a handstand on a Sustainable Skateboard. What you didn’t know is that the air you breathe while inside your own home maybe even worse, 10 times as worse! That’s because microbial pollutants like mold, pet dander, and plant pollen can combine with chemicals like radon to create something even nastier then that pile of dog poop in your backyard. These toxic particles floating around by things like your toothbrush can lead to allergies, asthma, and even AIDS! OK so not AIDS, but still some pretty nasty stuff. That’s why we put together a simple list of 3 things you can do to green your home.

  1. Open a Window. Sure an airtight home is essential for energy efficiency, but airtight homes also lead to poor air quality that can be 10 times more polluted then the air outdoors. Opening a window in your home not only will cut down on your energy use during the summer months, but also wile also cleanse your home of dirt, and mildew buildup.
  2. Use eco-friendly home cleaning products. Unlike their toxic counterparts these products will not fill the air in your home with dangerous chemicals, and best of all you can make them yourself.
  3. Install low-flow faucets. These faucets have been know to reduce water usage by as much as 40%. If you don’t have the cash to install these faucets just make a conscious effort to use as little water as possible when doing things like brushing your teeth or washing your hands.

Make Your Own Sandals

Your Finished Sandals

The Problem

In 2003 alone the U.S. generated more then 290 million tires. With an average lifespan of about five years unless recycled these tires will end up in the trash dump where they will take thousands of years to decompose. As the tires do decompose they will release harmful methane gas into the air, and worst of all create a toxic sludge that could seep into our waterways like your poop. With such an abundance of used tires why not use them for something useful like making a pair of sandals?

Why You Should Do This

  1. The pair I test drove are far more comfortable then any store bought pair I have ever owned.
  2. Why drop $80 bucks on a pair of Teva’s when you can make your own for free!
  3. Your doing your part to reduce waste and make this world a better place. For that you earn my green seal of approval.

Porn Saves Forest

The Bare Witch Project?

It seems a group of European activists are attempting to save the rain-forest one money shot at a time. The group cleverly titled F*&k for Forest (FFF) has already raised well over $350 thousand dollars by shooting pornographic films in none other then the rain-forest. Of that $350 thousand the group has already spent about $90 thousand in Costa Rica and another $90 in Ecuador on reforestation and ecology projects. If the groups reforestation efforts keep up at this pace that Skateboard Made From Leaves you’ve been eying may become a reality.

My recent post How To Make Green Toothpaste has received a considerable amount of traffic. It even made its way on to the cover page of diy dot com. After looking at readers responses across this site and others my question to you is would you ever consider making your own tooth paste, or Cleaning Products, or even Composting Your Poop to minimize your impact on the environment?
